Last month, SPARC engaged over 40 Appoquinimink High School students and six Career Coaches at the first-ever SPARC Career Panel, focused on jobs in the Allied Health industry. The panel was composed of five professionals from Christiana Care Health System, one of SPARC’s founding employer partners, and jobs ranged from Registered Nurse to Community Health Ambassador to Talent Manager.
SPARC aimed to demonstrate the multitude of career paths and jobs within Allied Health; that students have more options than just doctor or nurse. Students submitted their questions in advance, touching on topics like education paths, internships, likes/dislikes about their roles, communication skills, and more.
One of the panel’s favorite questions demonstrated just how diverse careers in the health care industry are. Answers for the question “What kinds of technology do you use on a daily basis?” included Twitter and LinkedIn for Talent Advisor Jeanna Lloyd, motorized wheelchairs and stretchers for Patient Escort Manager Nanci Hamilton, and heart monitors, blood pressure sensors and bladder scanners for Patient Experience Manager Ann-Marie Baker.
Two of the panel members were certified patient translators. Priya Dubey, an RN for the Surgery Department, works with Hindi-language patients and Carla Aponte, a Community Health Ambassador, uses her Spanish fluency to help Hispanic patients converse with doctors.
SPARC Career Panels are a30- or 60-minute in-school opportunity for students to interact with professionals in a variety of career fields and interests, specifically designed to give students current information and resources to prepare for their future careers. SPARC provides the panel of professionals, discussion topics, and questions.
